history

Palais Esplanade

The media library, founded in 2002, is located in the historically significant Palais Esplanade, which opened its doors to traders and travelers in 1767 on the Merano city wall as an inn. After the city walls were torn down in 1878, the building was expanded and its name changed to " Archduke Johann " in honor of the illustrious regular guest of the 1840s . Another renovation at the turn of the century, during which the building was expanded to five floors and 150 rooms, elevated the former inn to a luxury hotel. The most richly furnished suite was dedicated to Empress Sisi , who often stayed in the Passerstadt. During the two world wars, the hotel was used at times to distribute bread to the population and to store food. After the hotel was finally closed in the 1970s, a thorough renovation took place, which gave the premises the charm of the imperial era. Today the mirror, ladies' and “conversation room” houses the Merano language media library.

Branches

The Language Media Center in Merano does not actually have branches, but is networked with the City Library of Merano and works closely with the twin institution "Multisprachenzentrum" in the provincial capital of Bolzano .
