Speech formation

Speech formation is an artistic means of expression for promoting language in the areas of art, education and therapy. It was developed by Rudolf Steiner and his wife Marie Steiner-von Sivers in the 1920s.

General

In Steiner's view, language is a universal means of expression for the human soul. It is through them that man reveals himself most directly. Through rehearsals at various dramas at the beginning of the 20th century, the idea took shape to improve the recitation of the texts through a conscious artistic design down to the individual sound and thus give the spoken word on stage a new content and better expressiveness to give. In the course of time, this new form of designing language developed through Michael Cechov and many others into an independent art form that was and is used in many performances.

Recitation and declamation

Speech formation finds its artistic expression in the art of recitation and lecturing, in acting on the stage or in linguistic presentations without scenic means. If, according to Steiner, speaking is to become part of artistic creation, one must combine the word character with the mimic and gestural.

Speech care and therapeutic measures in terms of speech formation are necessary when articulation, breathing when speaking and the ability to express themselves are generally disturbed or impaired. In therapy, speech formation works with the qualities of vowels and consonants, speech rhythms and the styles of the epic , lyrical and dramatic . Speech formation is mainly used for speech and speech disorders , speech refusal , concentration disorders and to expand passive and active vocabulary . As part of the art-therapeutic complex, speech formation is used for various diseases or as a preventative measure for disease tendencies. In rehabilitation, too, speech formation through more conscious handling of sounds , rhythms ( verse theory ), language games and poems , with appropriate posture , movement and gesture can lead to a newly strengthened and lively interaction with oneself and the world. A pioneer in this field is Christa Slezak-Schindler , who first worked at a Waldorf school and now in her own institutions.

pedagogy

The development of language perception and language skills through speech formation is used as a support measure in Waldorf education and curative education . It is not only used here with schoolchildren who need language training, but also with teachers in order to be able to act as an example to imitate the children. Speech formation can have a supportive effect in acting projects and class games.
