Yuanling Yuan ( Chinese  袁元凌 , Pinyin Yuán Yuánling ; born June 3, 1994 in Shanghai ) is a Canadian chess player .

Life

The family moved to Canada when Yuanling Yuan was five years old. She learned to play chess from her father. In 2003 the family moved from Ottawa to Toronto . In Ottawa she played for the RA Chess Club . Your chess club in Toronto is the Scarborough Chess Club . She attended the Victoria Park Collegiate Institute in Toronto and has been studying at Yale University in New Haven (Connecticut) since 2012 .

successes

In 2003 Yuanling Yuan became the Canadian champion in the U10 age group. In 2007 she won the University Championships in Toronto and Ontario in seventh graders, and in the same year she became Junior Champion of Toronto. In 2008 she finished second behind the Cuban Zirka Frómeta Castillo at the Pan-American Women's Championship in San Salvador . She was also runner-up at the 2008 Zone Tournament in Kitchener, Ontario .

Yuanling Yuan played for the Canadian women's national team at the 2008 Chess Olympiad in Dresden on the second board (6.5 points from 10 games), the 2010 Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk on the top board (7.5 points from 11 games) and at the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromsø again on the top board (7.5 points from 11 games).

In 2012, she played for the Connecticut Dreadnoughts in the United States Chess League .

Since October 2009 she has held the title of International Women's Champion (WIM). This made her the youngest Canadian ever to receive this title (in 2015, Qiyu Zhou was also named WIM at the age of 15). She achieved the norms for this at the Pan-American Women's Individual Championship in May 2008 with overachievement and six weeks later at an invitation tournament in Chicago . Her Elo rating of 2270 in May 2015 was the highest Elo rating ever achieved by a Canadian (in October 2015, Zhou Qiyu achieved a higher Elo rating of 2328).

Chess in the Library

In June 2009 she founded the Chess in the Library program . This is an organization that promotes chess playing in public libraries on a voluntary basis, provides chess there and generally organizes chess play in libraries. Twenty city libraries in Canada (Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia ) and one library in Washington, DC are affiliated with the program.

In the eighth round of the 2010 Chess Olympiad, Yuanling Yuan played with Black against the Norwegian Katrine Tjølsen . In King's Fianchetto Opening , in an English Opening passed, managed yuan Lingyuan through consistent play, the queenside to dominate, thus winning the game.
