The two-axle railcar 501 of the Spreewaldbahn AG was procured in 1934 by the Talbot wagon factory in Aachen for the rationalization of operations on the Spreewaldbahn and was intended to replace the steam operation for certain connections.
history
The railcar was built in 1933 at the Talbot wagon factory in Aachen and arrived in Straupitz on July 29, 1934 . The advantage of the railcar was the one-man operation and the separation of passenger and freight traffic. There were no long stops at the terminal stations for shunting and relocating. On the 13.8 km route between Straupitz and Goyatz, it ran around six minutes faster than a steam-hauled train.
At first, in keeping with the spirit of the times, it wore an advertising label “Fliegender-Spreewälder”. In the first few months, the vehicle was also given a sidecar . For unknown reasons, it derailed twice, so that the railcar then operated as a single vehicle. Until the last few years of operation, it was used by schoolchildren on the Straupitz– Goyatz and Straupitz– Burg routes . In Burg, travelers to Cottbus had to change to a locomotive-hauled train. The vehicle also provided the evening connection between Straupitz and Cottbus.
Shortly before the Spreewaldbahn was shut down, the railcar was parked due to extended axle sleeves, damaged wheel tires and missing spare parts and scrapped in 1974.
Technical features / equipment
The railcar's Daimler-Benz drive motor produced 65 hp and hung in a separate spring-loaded frame in the center of the undercarriage. The torque was transmitted to an axle via a cardan shaft and a gearbox.
The floor plan of the vehicle with the two entry areas designed as luggage compartments resembled a tram. The luggage compartments were separated from the 28-person passenger compartment by sliding doors. The outer sliding doors at the entrance were given a clear width of 850 mm. The seats were fitted with foam rubber seats and back cushions.
