Spreuerhofstrasse

The Spreuerhofstraße is an alley in the old town of Reutlingen . It is only 50 meters long and at its northern end forks around three adjoining houses, on which its western arm forms the “narrowest street in the world” according to the Guinness Book of Records . The width of the “ street ” there is on average 40 centimeters, at its narrowest point it is 31 centimeters wide.

The gap, or the narrowest area next to the building at number 9, is 3.80 meters long. Since it is located on urban land, it can be assigned to the public street area, which made it possible to use the title of "narrowest street".

history

The alley was created after the city fire of 1726 , in which around 80 percent of the residential buildings and most of the public buildings were destroyed, and in 1820 it was designated as local road number 72. The Spreuerhof was originally a grain store for the Reutlingen hospital and the alley presumably served as an escape route. After the efforts of a tourism manager from Reutlingen's city marketing company, it was entered in the Guinness Book of Records in 2007 as the “world's narrowest street” . Parliament Street in the southern English city of Exeter previously carried this title. Since the record, Spreuerhofstrasse has been a tourist attraction in Reutlingen and it is said to have been walked on by Chinese President Hu Jintao .

The adjoining house with number 9 is currently in a dilapidated condition. Because of its rotten beams, it is sloping increasingly, making the path through the alley even narrower and the distance between the gutter and the adjacent building is now less than a centimeter. Since the owner did not want to modernize the house, the building is not a listed building and the record title would have been jeopardized by demolition, the city of Reutlingen bought it in October 2013 and immediately began renovation work.
