The Springpfuhl is a lake and a standing natural body of water with landscaping and water management design in the Marzahn district of Berlin in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district and is located directly on Helene-Weigel-Platz in Springpfuhlpark .
geology
The Springpfuhl lies in a dead ice hole that formed at the end of the Vistula Ice Age 13,000 to 14,000 years ago . The substrate of the lake is geologically and consists of sand dunes, which in a thin layer on sand and below is boulder clay . In addition, next to this layer there is humus and loamy sand over the various types of subsoil.
description
The spring pond consists of two parts of the water that were created by siltation , the large and the small spring pond. The two ponds are directly connected to each other. The western part of the central lake leads a moat-like connection, over which a small wooden bridge is stretched, which was built when the park was created. In addition, in the western area of the lake, a bar level has been set into the water. The pool is fed by stratified water from 2 to 3 meters depth and rainwater introduction. The Springpfuhl drains through an overflow to the Springpfuhlgraben and on to the Marzahn-Hohenschönhausener Grenzgraben (this flows after crossing the Papenpfuhlbeckens as Friedrichsfelde-Hoehenschönhausener Grenzgraben, finally piped into the Spree). Between 1976 and 1979, the Springpfuhlpark was built in the course of the new housing estate and the Pfuhl was redesigned into a rainwater retention basin . The bank was straightened with concrete walls, which brings many problems with it, since the water cannot seep into a flat bank zone when the water level is high. Nesting sites are very endangered. Amphibians don't like steep concrete edges. The problems were recognized and were taken into account during the renovation in 1991. The concrete edges were flattened in places and a shallow water zone was created in the small spring pool. The connection between the two ponds was provided with an inlet barrier and the connection is closed in the event of acute pollution. In the embankment areas there are paved rainwater inlets at several intervals.
Flora and fauna
In the central body of water there are two islands for water birds and frogs. The large island in the north was created naturally and in the south at the level of the swimming pool there is a small artificial island with a two-part flooding character. Depending on the circumstances, the water is more or less overgrown with grass, willows and ornamental shrubs. In addition, reeds and reed beds grow in sections in the bank areas and water lilies occasionally grow in the lake . In order to observe the swans , mallards and coots , a terrace was created on each part of the water, which allows a far-reaching view of the water, which is otherwise lined with trees and bushes.
