The Sputhmühle was built in 1882 by Robert Sputh on the Sebnitzbach about 200 meters above the Mittelndorf stop of the Sebnitz Valley Railway as a wood grinding shop. In 1883 the Voith company delivered the first three wood grinders. The main buyer of the pulp was the paper factory in Sebnitz . After Sputh received the patent for a process for the production of beer coasters in 1892, the Sputhmühle functioned as the world's first production site for beer coasters made from wood pulp, which were exported from here to Brazil. In the beginning, the lids were made using the scooping process, analogous to hand paper-makingmanufactured. From 1904 onwards, it was made from pulp board, which was obtained using a Fourdrinier. The pulp was poured into molds which were left to dry overnight. From 1904 a steam engine from the Görlitzer Maschinenbauanstalt und Eisengießerei AG was available to generate energy . In 1905 and 1907 the Voith company supplied two Francis water turbines . The Sputhmühle employed up to 120 people from the surrounding villages at peak times. The two 30 meter high chimneys of the factory were a striking eye-catcher.

Since there was no paved road network to the Sputhmühle, a siding to the Sebnitztalbahn was used to deliver the raw material and transport the finished products away.

On March 16, 1937, the factory still owned by the Sputh family fell victim to a fire caused by spontaneous combustion and was never rebuilt. A preserved wings served until 1967 as a residence and to 1969 as a children's camp of VEB Minol . In 1970 the side wing was also torn down because it was in disrepair.

Today only a few overgrown rubble and foundation walls tell of the former Sputhmühle. The course of the Mühlgraben and the loading point of the Sebnitz Valley Railway can also be seen in the landscape.
