history

Robert Sputh was the owner of the Mittelndorfer Sputhmühle , which is considered the world's first production site for beer coasters made from wood pulp .

The place name is, just like the names of most places in the area, not of Slavic but of German origin. It is made up of two components, "center" and "village". The village was first mentioned in 1446 as part of the owned under the name "Mytelsdorff" Berken from Duba located domination Wildenstein . When it came to Saxony on April 8, 1451, the place was called "Mitteldorf" and as early as 1629 the current spelling was in use. Mittelndorf emerged as a Waldhufendorf in the course of the German East Settlement . As an administrative village, with its 14 Hufen forest hoof area, it was directly subordinate to the Office of Hohnstein from the 16th to the 19th century in terms of manorial, hereditary and administrative matters. In contrast, it was and is a parish in the neighboring Lichtenhain.

On the basis of the rural community code of 1838 , Mittelndorf gained independence as a rural community, the administration of which was incumbent on the Schandau court office in 1856. Mittelndorf was part of the Pirna administration in 1875 , the size of the parish corridor in 1900 was around 536 hectares. It was mainly used for agriculture, and there was also the Mittelndorfer mill , first mentioned in 1518 , which today serves as a restaurant and guesthouse. In 1882, Robert Sputh (1843–1913) from Dresden in the Sebnitz valley north of Mittelndorf had the Sputhmühle built. After Sputh 1892 had obtained the patent for a method for producing beer glass coasters, the Sputhmühle acted as the world's first production site for from pulp produced Coaster exported to Brazil. Since there was no paved road network to the Sputhmühle, which employed 120 workers from the surrounding villages at peak times, a siding to the Sebnitz Valley Railway was used to deliver the raw material and transport the finished products away. The Sputhmühle burned down in 1937 and was later demolished. The Mittelndorf volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1889 . In 1928, the Mittelndorfer Workers' Gymnastics Club set up the Mittelndorfer open-air swimming pool on the edge of the forest northwest of the village, which has been closed since 1997.

In 1974 Mittelndorf, which had been part of the Sebnitz district since 1952 , was incorporated into Lichtenhain . In 1994 Lichtenhain joined the new Kirnitzschtal community ; At that time, the district of Sebnitz was merged into the district of Saxon Switzerland and in 2008 the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains. Since October 1, 2012, Mittelndorf has been part of the Kirnitzschtal valley in the large district town of Sebnitz. One of the most important sources of income for the residents is tourism.
