geography

Village panorama from Lichtenhain

Lichtenhain is located in the right Elbe part of Saxon Switzerland on the plateau between the rivers Sebnitz in the north and Kirnitzsch in the south. The place is located in the center of a cleared area almost completely surrounded by wooded slopes, the village center lies at the beginning of a right side valley of the Kirnitzschtal. The Lichtenhainer Dorfbach, which runs in it, forms the Lichtenhainer waterfall shortly before it flows into the Kirnitzsch , a well-known tourist attraction in Saxon Switzerland. A few 100 meters southeast of the waterfall are the Kuhstall rock gate and Wildenstein Castle , which belong to Bad Schandau . Another waterfall on Lichtenhainer Flur is the Beuthenfall, a little further downstream the Kirnitzsch. The Haidemühle , which collapsed during the flood in August 2010 , stood in the middle between the Lichtenhain waterfall and the Beuthenfall . From the Pfarrberg, located near the locality of Lichtenhain, there is a panoramic view.

Lichtenhain has 515 inhabitants. (Status: 2011) The Lichtenhain district borders on Mittelndorf to the west and Ottendorf to the east . To the northeast and to the north are neighboring Hertigswalde and Hainersdorf . In the north-west it borders Ulbersdorf , a district of Hohnstein , and in the south the Bad Schandau district of Ostrau .

The most important roads in town are the two state roads 165 (Kirnitzschtalstraße) and 154 (Hohe Straße, also known as Panoramastraße) leading from Bad Schandau to Sebnitz . The latter was moved to the north from the center of the village around 1930 and was therefore given the name Neue Straße. From here the district road 8730 branches off to Ulbersdorf. To the public transport Lichtenhain is the via the bus line 260 regional transport Saxon Switzerland & Eastern Ore Mountains tethered. At the Lichtenhain waterfall there is also the terminus of the Kirnitzschtalbahn , an overland tram that is primarily used for tourist purposes . In addition, the Lichtenhain waterfall is located on several long-distance hiking trails, including the tourist trail , the painter path , the poet-musician-painter path and the Lusatian snake .

history

The place name is, just like the names of most places in the area, not of Slavic but of German origin. It is made up of the components light and grove . The village was mentioned for the first time in 1409. The spelling "Lichtinhayn" was in use in 1430, in 1495 there are two variants side by side: "Lichtenaw alias et vero Lychtenhan". In 1791 the place was called "Lichtenhayn".

Lichtenhain was created as a Waldhufendorf in the course of the German East Settlement . As early as 1500 there was a parish church in the village , which belonged to the archdeaconate of nearby Upper Lusatia . The predecessor building of the Bad Schandau St. John's Church was assigned to it until 1459 and from 1539 to 1545 as a branch church . The neighboring towns of Altendorf and Mittelndorf are traditionally parish, and until 1545 Rathmannsdorf as well . The Lichtenhain church was rebuilt and expanded in 1697/98. The three-story baroque altarpiece by the Zittau sculptor Johann Konrad Edelwehr was also created at that time. Presumably the Holy Staircase was a connecting route from Schmilka to the Lichtenhain church. During the severe devastation of the Thirty Years' War in 1633/34, the inhabitants hid in the rocky areas above the Kirnitzschtal.

As an administrative village, Lichtenhain, with its 19 Hufen-sized Waldhufenflur, was under manorial, hereditary and administrative aspects from the 16th to the 19th century directly to the Hohnstein district, and a small part of the local farmers were also liable to the Lichtenhain pastor's interest. The administration of the place was incumbent on the court office Schandau in 1856. On the basis of the rural community code of 1838 , Lichtenhain gained independence as a rural community. This was part of the Pirna administration in 1875 , the size of the parish corridor in 1900 was around 797 hectares. The upper village, which was partially burned down in 1890, was then rebuilt.

From 1952 Lichtenhain belonged to the Sebnitz district . On April 1, 1974, the neighboring towns of Altendorf and Mittelndorf were incorporated into Lichtenhain ; on March 1, 1994 Lichtenhain, Ottendorf and Saupsdorf merged to form the new municipality of Kirnitzschtal , the administration of which was based in Lichtenhain. In the same year, the district of Sebnitz was first merged into the district of Saxon Switzerland and in 2008 the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains. Lichtenhain has belonged to the city of Sebnitz since October 1st, 2012 after the incorporation of Kirnitzschtal. The building with the oldest structure is now the four-sided courtyard of the Hereditary Court, other old farms can be found in Niederdorf and above the valley floor. The Lichtenhain Flower Festival has been celebrated in the village since 1963.
