The Square de Berlin (German: Berliner Platz ) is a green space in the 8th arrondissement of Paris .

location

The 4,472 m² Square de Berlin is located in the center of Paris near the Avenue des Champs-Élysées . It has the shape of an almost equilateral triangle . It is bordered to the west by Avenue Franklin-D.-Roosevelt , to the southeast by Avenue du Général-Eisenhower and to the northeast by an unnamed footpath. This separates the Square de Berlin from the northern green area that surrounds the Théâtre du Rond-Point .

Across the street from Avenue du Général-Eisenhower is the west wing of the Grand Palais with a police station and the Palais de la Découverte science museum . Not far from the Square de Berlin is the office building of the German Embassy in France at number 15 Avenue Franklin-D.-Roosevelt. The closest station to Métro Paris is Champs-Élysées - Clemenceau .

history

In 1999, the German parliament and government headquarters was moved from Bonn to Berlin, which decided Paris City Hall , the twin city of Berlin with a place to honor. For this purpose, a previously unnamed green space in the 8th arrondissement near the German embassy was selected and the name was decided in October 1999 by the Paris municipal council (Conseil municipal) . The Square de Berlin in Paris shows parallels to Pariser Platz in Berlin, where the French Embassy in Germany is located. The inauguration of the Square de Berlin took place on March 17, 2000 in the presence of Berlin's Mayor Eberhard Diepgen and his Parisian counterpart Jean Tiberi . The existing green area with its trees, bushes and lawn was given new signage for the occasion. In addition, a granite memorial stone commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall and there is a Berlin bear made from floral elements .

Before that, there was a rue de Berlin in Paris , a street in the Quartier de l'Europe that had had this name since 1826. At the beginning of the First World War , the name was changed to Rue de Liège , as the Belgian city of the same name was particularly hard hit by the fighting. The Berlin metro station, which opened in 1911, was also renamed Liège in 1914 . At Pariser Platz in Berlin, however, there were never any changes to the name.
