The Neumünden City Cemetery is a historic cemetery in the Neumünden district in Hann. Münden . Some of it is only used for urn burials . There are grave fields for German and foreign war dead in the cemetery. The cemetery has in parts a park-like character with old trees. The cemetery is operated by the Hann. Münden as an institution under public law of the city of Hann. Münden.

History and current use

When the old cemetery on Bahnhofstrasse (now Wall) had to be closed in 1882 after 33 years of occupancy, the Münden City Council decided to build a new cemetery on the Upper Ferry , today's Neumünden cemetery. The first burial of a child named Auguste Schmidt took place there on September 11, 1882. In 1883 the cemetery chapel for funeral services was completed, which is now a listed building. In the chapel there are historical wooden benches with up to 50 seats and an organ . After extensive renovation work inside and outside the chapel, barrier-free access and modern sanitary facilities are now available. The brick catafalque in front of the lectern, which was originally built as a laying out place for coffins , is remarkable .

Already in 1917 it became apparent that the previously created 3.5 hectares of occupancy area would not be sufficient, which is why the cemetery was expanded by the upper, so-called new part , with a further 3.5 hectares by 1921 .

Due to poor soil conditions and limited occupancy capacity of the cemetery, the city council of Hann. Münden 1961 the creation of a new 6 hectare cemetery above the Querenburg, the Hermannshagen cemetery. After its dedication on July 1, 1974, it was decided to close the Neumünden cemetery in 1995. In 1994 this decision was repealed. The closure is now limited to the upper, so-called "new part". This can no longer be covered with graves. There are newly planted fruit trees .

On the lower, "old original" part, only urn burials are permitted in urn graves.
