Municipal river bath Lichtenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The municipal river bath Lichtenberg was a river bathing establishment set up by the Berlin district of Lichtenberg at the time , directly on the Rummelsburger See . Her name was commonly known because of its proximity to the thermal power station Klingenberg simply pool Klingenberg . It existed from 1927 to 1950.

History and description of the facility

Former administration and restoration building on the cooling water outlet channel of the Klingenberg power plant

The municipal river bath Lichtenberg was built from 1925 to 1928 according to plans by Rudolf Gleye directly on the bank and in the Spree in the catchment area of the large power plant. It was opened on May 21, 1927 at Köpenicker Chaussee 1-4. The institution consisted of three different swimming pools - a school pool (25 m × 50 m), an equally large warm pool and a large sports pool (25 m × 100 m). In the cooler season, the water in the warm pool was heated with the waste heat from the neighboring power plant. A fourth pool was reserved for the ten-meter diving platform. All pool edges were bricked and surrounded by wooden walkways. A 26,000 m² sandy beach invited families to go on Sunday excursions. Numerous lifeguards ensured order and security on the entire site, the area of which was given as 50,000 m². It is said that up to 10,000 visitors were counted in one day.

The structural facilities of the Flussbadeanstalt included permanent changing rooms, technical buildings, sales kiosks, and later a restaurant. All of the buildings that have been preserved (residential buildings, technical halls, cooling water channel outlet and swimming pool surrounds) are listed as historical monuments .

In the final years of World War II , when the fighting for Berlin began, the facility was closed. Soon after the end of the war, many Berliners used the swimming pool again, which was then closed in 1950. “The Klingenberg river pool cannot be released due to the poor quality of the water caused by the factory sewage flowing in. For this reason, a repair of the destroyed bathing facilities is not planned, ”it said in the Berliner Zeitung .

Transport links

The outdoor swimming pool could be reached either by tram or on foot from the Ostkreuz , Neulichtenberg (today: Nöldnerplatz) or Rummelsburg S-Bahn stations .

New land use

After the entire residential area of Rummelsburger Bucht had been rebuilt at the turn of the 21st century, there were considerations to use the area of the former bathing establishment for commercial purposes. This led to the establishment of a bus station for the Frank Richert GmbH haulage company .
