Rudolf Gleye (born December 26, 1880 in Braunschweig , † June 8, 1926 in Berlin ) was a German civil engineer and municipal building officer in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg .

Live and act

Rudolf Gleye passed his Abitur examination at the Realgymnasium in autumn 1900 and then studied at the Technical University of Braunschweig . In 1902 he passed the preliminary examination and passed the main examination in civil engineering with distinction at Easter 1905 . With a supplementary diploma thesis, he then acquired the academic degree of graduate engineer. Already during the semester break, Gleye was able to gain first practical experience in the construction of the Urft Dam and also contribute to publications. After graduating, he worked in succession in the city building authorities of Breslau , Potsdam and Halle an der Saale . During this time he specialized in modern urban sewerage from planning to construction management. In the summer of 1908, thanks to a travel bonus awarded to him by the Brunswick State Ministry, Gleye undertook a major trip to study the newer urban wastewater disposal. The experience he gained then led to a job in Greifswald , where he had to set up a sewer construction office and to draw up an overall plan for the sewer system in the Hanseatic city. However, due to financial bottlenecks, it was not carried out. He stayed in Greifswald and took over the representation of the director of the municipal gas, water and electricity works. His practical experience and theoretical considerations led to his being a Dr.-Ing. On December 16, 1910 with a thesis on sewer systems in cities (see writings ) . received his doctorate . In 1912 he moved to Lichtenberg near Berlin to the house at Möllendorffstraße  120 and devoted himself to new tasks in the municipal building management. Gleye was appointed city architect in 1914; He combined that with a move to Weichselstrasse  1.

In this position Gleye played a major role in the construction of municipal buildings such as the Lichtenberg public baths and in the structural development of Karlshorst . He was particularly committed to the realization of the forest settlement in Berlin-Lichtenberg projected by Peter Behrens , for which he took over the construction management in the first construction phase in 1919/1920. So under his leadership, single-family row houses and four-family houses with full electrical, gas, water and sewage connections as well as associated gardens and stables for small animals were built.

With the law on the formation of the city of Berlin in 1920, Gleye was accepted into the first Lichtenberg district council assembly together with twelve other previous community members . At the meeting on February 9, 1921, Gleye, who was not part of the party, was elected as a salaried member of the district office , into which he was officially introduced on March 30, 1921 by the Berlin mayor Gustav Boess . Gleye worked here for some time with the architect Carlo Jelkmann , who concentrated on the construction of swimming pools and later became known primarily for the Stadtbad Mitte (1927–1930) built according to his designs . This close cooperation led to the fact that Gleye dealt with the construction or further construction of the Lichtenberger Volksbadeanstalt and with the planning of the river pool at the Rummelsburger Bucht . Due to his training, he took great care in the technical equipment of the Lichtenberg municipal swimming pool (swimming pools, water supply systems, saunas, showers, sun and air baths with changing rooms on the roof).

The Flussbad Lichtenberg (access Köpenicker Chaussee  1–4), officially opened on May 21, 1927, had a number of well-thought-out structures for the swimming pools, connections, hidden pump systems and even took into account winter use as an ice rink. At Gleye's suggestion, the Lichtenberg district office agreed with the owners of the Klingenberg power plant to include the company's heating system to generate heated water for the large swimming pool. In addition, Gleye was able to obtain a construction subsidy for the outdoor pool of 30,000  Reichsmarks . The planned costs for the outdoor swimming pool were around 540,000 Reichsmarks, the greater part of which was taken over by the Berlin magistrate .

Gleye was buried in the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery. The Lichtenberg district posthumously recognized his successful commitment by renaming the Haselhorstweg and the Amselweg in the Wuhlheide forest settlement in Gleyeweg on September 9, 1931.

Rudolf Gleye was married to Gertrude, who moved to Steglitzer Strasse 80 in Berlin W 35 (today Berlin-Schöneberg ) after his death .
