Stele from Croas ar Peulven

The stele of Croas ar Peulven (also called Borne milliaire de Quillidien - Milestone of Quillidien -) is probably a protohistoric stele reused by the Romans . It is located in Plouigneau on Rue d'Encremer, in the east of the Finistère department in Brittany in France .

description

The cylindrical, roughly frustoconical granite stele is about 2.9 m high, has a diameter of 0.5 m and a weight of about 2900 kg. A rectangular incision is visible on its northwest side. Although incorrectly mentioned in some epigraphic texts, the stone is unlabeled.

It stands near where it was found Croas ar Peulven, more than 500 meters south of the Quillidien farm and about two hundred meters northwest of Keranfors, where Louis Pape found another stele. The stele lay in a ditch or embankment on the eastern side of the road for a long time. It was recovered in 1981 and placed in a rectangular base.

The stone was first mentioned in the 1950s by Pierre Merlat (1911-1959) and Louis Pape (1933-2014) as part of a list of the Roman path markings of the Civitas of Osismier . Louis Pape assumes that the stone was moved over the centuries.

The prehistoric stele

Based on its shape and design, Michelle Le Brozec and Marie-Yvanne Daire (1998) assume that the stone was erected in the Iron Age (5th to 1st century BC). Hence the name “Gallic Stele” in contrast to Neolithic megaliths and menhirs . The monuments, which are generally poorly documented, especially if they have no decorations, are sometimes associated with stones in burial fields . They did not have the irregular shape of the megaliths, were machined and sometimes had polished surfaces.

Due to its proximity to several ancient roads, the stele is believed to have been reused as a landmark during Roman times .
