Denomination
Under denomination refers to either the minimum trading nominal value unit of bonds or of individual shares or the division of a unit of currency in certain nominal value (nominal value ranking of a coin or banknote series), for example in the Euro-currency.
General
For example, if the denomination of a bond is € 1,000, it can be traded for a nominal value of € 1,000, € 2,000, € 3,000, etc.
In the past, denomination was understood to mean cutting out or punching out the flint , also known as a coin plate or round piece , from the zain with a pair of scissors. The zain was the rolled or hammered coin metal strip that was worked out from the original cast bar.
Euro
- Coins
1 - 2 - 5 - 10 - 20 - 50 (euro) cents and 1 - 2 euros
- Banknotes
5 - 10 - 20 - 50 - 100 - 200 - 500 euros
Other currencies
The denomination 1 - 2 - 5 - 10 - 20 - 50 - etc. is the most common today in modern currencies; however, not all possible values are brought out for many currencies. In the more recent past - and to this day in the United States and Brazil - 0.25 coins were popular instead of 0.20 coins, for example in the Netherlands until the introduction of the euro and in Scandinavia. - All nominal values in the same column have roughly the same value.
- Green: denominations are available as coins and banknotes.
- Orange: Coin is formally still valid and still in circulation, but is no longer minted because of its low market value.
The denomination usually follows an exponential law as the value increases. Using the euro as an example, a best-fit line is shown for the points for each coin or banknote. The small deviations from this straight line result from the requirement for "smooth" numbers.
