Church of Saint-Etienne in Rosheim
The late Romanesque tower

Saint-Étienne is a Roman Catholic parish church in Rosheim ( Bas-Rhin department ) in France . The church has been a monument historique since 1990 .

history

The church, consecrated to the holy arch-martyr Stephanus , dates back to a late Romanesque building from the turn of the 12th to the 13th century, the choir tower of which was retained as a bell tower when the new classical church was built. The design for the new church with its monumental entrance facade with four Doric columns comes from Nicolas Alexandre Salins de Montfort .

In the new building, the old choir in the basement of the Romanesque tower and thus the traditional east-facing of the church were given up. Instead, the choir is now in the south of the building and the tower is in the last third of the nave on the east wall.
