St-Jean-Baptiste

The Roman Catholic Church of St-Jean-Baptiste is located in Volkrange , a district of Thionville in the Moselle department in France . The church is inscribed on the register of cultural heritage in France.

history

A parish in Volkrange already existed in the 13th century. St-Pierre in Veymerange was parish off from here around 1250 . The oldest parts of the current St-Jean-Baptiste church date back to the 15th century. First, a small east-facing choir tower church was built. Due to the length of the slope, there was not enough space for the expansion of the church in the course of the 16th century in the late Gothic style , so a larger choir was built in a south-facing direction and the tower became a flank tower. The nave and the north facade are dated 1723. In the 18th century the tower was also raised. In 1727 St-Isidore in Elange became a branch church of St-Jean-Baptiste.
