Saint-Jean (actually: Saint-Jean-à-la-Porte-Latine ; German St. John in front of the Latin gate ) is a church building of the Lutheran Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine in Goxwiller ( Bas-Rhin department ) in France . The chapel in the choir tower is used for Roman Catholic worship. The church is inscribed on the register of cultural heritage in France.

history

The church was first mentioned in 1371, the Gothic choir tower dates from around 1400. The choir contains frescoes from the 15th century depicting Saints Anthony and Christophorus. The tower was raised in the 19th century. The nave dates from the 18th century. In 1554 the Reformation was introduced to the church . By order of the French government under Louis XIV, the chapel in the basement of the tower has been used by Lutherans and Catholics as a simultaneum since 1685 . The church has a Johann Conrad Sauer organ from 1811, which is registered as a monument historique.
