St-Lazare (Avallon)
St. Lazare is a former collegiate church in the French town of Avallon in the Yonne department ( Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region ).

The building was completed in 1106 and dedicated to St. Lazarus . St. Lazare is the last Burgundian Romanesque church . It was damaged and changed several times over the centuries, but the portals have been preserved. While the tympanum of the larger left portal lost the figure of the blessing Christ that was previously there , the smaller right portal is in its original state. There the arch field shows a representation of the wise men from the Orient .
From the damage caused by the Huguenots in 1562 and from the collapse of the north tower in 1633, a stepped portal with columnar figures is left that has a close relationship with the Île-de-France, Chartres and St-Denis . The king portal of Chartres was also built around 1145/50. Avallon shows a very similar shape at the same time.
The similarity to Chartres cannot be overlooked: the same slender, columnar figure with the individually chiseled head, with the tight-fitting robes and the typical fine parallel folds. This is not the strong movement gesture of the Cluny master in Vézelay . In the immediate vicinity, another school of sculpture has based itself on the northern Chartres instead of Cluny .
The heavily profiled intermediate columns are also present. The far less art-historical importance of this complex compared to Chartres has also meant that less has been done here against weathering.
