St-Pierre-St-Michel-Sts-Innocents Church

The Roman Catholic parish church of St-Pierre-St-Michel-Sts-Innocents is a double church in Bueil-en-Touraine in the Indre-et-Loire department in France . In the west, the complex includes the former parish church, which was consecrated to St. Peter and is no longer used today, to which the former collegiate church , consecrated to St. Archangel Michel and the Holy Innocent Children , connects to the east . The church has been classified as a monument historique since 1912 .

history

There is evidence of a church in Bueil-en-Touraine since the 12th century. In 1108, Hugues de Vaux, Lord von Bueil, donated the church to the Abbey of Saint-Julien in Tours . The abbey established a priory there, which was dedicated to St. Peter. Parts of this Romanesque church have been preserved in today's north wall. In 1394 the four brothers of the Bueil family, who wanted to determine the place of their burial in Bueil and entrust it to the religious, founded a chapter of regular canons and had the collegiate church built, which they consecrated to St. Michael the Archangel and the holy Innocent Children.

The entire complex received its present form from the end of the 15th century in high Gothic forms. The parish church was expanded to a two-nave hall to the south by another nave. The single-nave collegiate church follows the northern nave of the parish church in the east and is only accessible from there through a small portal. According to an inscription, the work ended in 1512. The tower was placed in front of the southern nave of the parish church from 1540 to 1552. These construction measures explain the unusual symmetry of today's double church. No structural changes were made to the church until the abolition of the monastery in the French Revolution.
