history

The St. Andreas Church in Schlechtbach

The church was built in 1447 on a hill in the middle of the village. A small tower clad with wooden shingles is located above the gable. Inside the chapel with its Gothic tracery windows are particularly valuable furnishings:

  • a Gothic main altar
  • in the Shrine of Our Lady, a rare example of a beautiful Madonna from 1420, with a strong S-shaped posture, a child held high and an intimate facial expression
  • by her side statues of St. Magnus (with a dragon) and Korbinian (with a Korbinian bear ) from the end of the 15th century
  • The painted altar wings by Josef Braun from 1946 contain depictions of the life of Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows and the Man of Sorrows .
  • More late Gothic figures are in choir Holy. Andreas and Patrizius (bishop with staff and book), on the north wall of the ship Josef and Antonius of Padua. On the south wall there is a large crucifixion group with the apostles John and Paul.

In 1618 the church was renovated in the construction site of Gotteszell Monastery .

It was in this church that Justinus Kerner , then senior doctor in Gaildorf , got the inspiration for his ballad The Geiger von Gmünd . Kerner stayed with Ludwig Uhland from October 9th to 10th, 1815 at his friend Prescher's in the Gschwender rectory. Today there is a reproduction of St. Bother to see.
