St. Anne's Chapel

The St. Anna Chapel is a Catholic chapel in Baden , Switzerland . It is located east of the city center between the Landvogteischloss and the canton school , not far from the border with the Wettingen community . It was once used as a place of worship for the neighboring infirmary .

On the road to Wettingen, far outside the city, the "infirmary in the field" was built in the second quarter of the 15th century as a branch of the Agnesspital . Originally intended for lepers, the old people, the poor, beggars and orphans later lived there. Concerned for the salvation of these marginalized people, the city council donated the building of their own chapel in 1480. Construction work was completed in 1484.

Church-wise, the Anna chapel belonged to the Wettingen parish until 1887 , but the Baden council appointed the church caretaker. This controlled the chapel assets, while the Wettinger people priest received the donations. From 1529 to 1531, when the Wettingen monastery had fallen away from the old faith, Reformed services were held temporarily for the Bern and Zurich diaries . In 1798, French troops used the chapel as a hospital .

The simple one-nave building in the Gothic style has a choir closed on three sides and a hipped pitched roof. The west gable has a two-part arched arcade that serves as a bell carrier. Traces of a side portal can be seen on the north wall, which enabled a direct connection to the infirmary. The interior appears sober, as the neo-Gothic interior was largely removed in 1945 after around fifty years. Late Gothic frescoes from the late 15th century were uncovered in 1944 .
