The Evangelical Lutheran St. Christophorus Church in Breitenbrunn in the Ore Mountains is a small hall church from the 16th century.

history

In the middle of the 16th century, Breitenbrunn separated from the parish in Grünstädtel and formed its own parish, in which the neighboring village of Rittersgrün was initially also a parish. A chapel had previously stood in the same place. The church was consecrated in 1559, extensively renovated and expanded between 1719 and 1725, a vestibule was added in 1837 and restored several times in the 20th and 21st centuries.

architecture

Exterior architecture

The plastered quarry stone building is closed on three sides in the east. The hipped roof has a wide tow hatch as a sound opening for the bells. The slim roof turret with clock has been renewed several times.

Interior design

The flat-roofed hall houses the furnishings from 1720 to 1740. The galleries run around the hall on two floors, are clamped between slender pillars and glazed and slightly vaulted behind the altar. The ceiling was painted in 1740 by the Johanngeorgenstadt masters Schildbach and Grimm and depicts the transfiguration of the Lord surrounded by baroque ornamentation and the evangelists in oval laurel frames in the corners .

The altar, which was built around 1740, has a resurrection painting in a baroque frame and is crowned by the eye of God . The polygonal pulpit is simple and integrated into the lower north gallery. The older crucifix on the sound cover is probably late Gothic . The wooden baptismal font, carried by an angel, dates from the first half of the 18th century. The organ from 1852 was built by the Wer Duration organ builder Johann Gotthilf Bärmig .

Others

In the churchyard there is a memorial stone in memory of Wolfgang Uhle , who became known as the plague pastor of Annaberg, and who last worked as a pastor in Breitenbrunn, where he was fatally struck by a blow at the altar in 1594. His tomb is not exactly known.
