St. George's Cathedral

The modern Gännätä-Tsige-Mänagäscha-Qïddus-Gïyorgis Church ( Amharic ገነተ ጽጌ መናገሻ ቅዱስ ግዮርጊስ ) is an Ethiopian Orthodox church building in Addis Ababa . It is known for its traditional octagonal shape and is considered an example of a European interpretation of Ethiopian church architecture. It's at the north end of Churchill Street.

It was built by Emperor Menelik II in 1896 to commemorate his victory in the battle of Adua against the Italians . The tabot (carrying altar) in today's church was previously carried onto the battlefield and therefore brought victory to the Abyssinians . The architect of the cathedral was Sebastian Castagna, it was built by the Italians defeated at Adua and eventually captured. It is dedicated to Saint George , the national saint of Ethiopia. In 1917 Zauditu was crowned Empress and in 1930 Haile Selassie was crowned Emperor, which is why the cathedral is also a place of pilgrimage for Rastafarians . The Italian fascists looted the cathedral in 1937 during the Abyssinian War . After the liberation, the building was restored by the emperor in 1941.
