St. John's Church

The St. Johannes Church is a Catholic church in the Mannheim district of Rheinau-Süd . It was built between 1984 and 1986 according to plans by Heinz Heß .

history

From 1933, a settlement of IG Farben (today BASF ) was built south of Mannheim on the Brühl district . In 1944 the Mannheim settlement was incorporated. The pastor of the Rheinau St. Antonius Church was responsible for looking after the Catholics . A small church with 200 seats was built as a branch in Rheinau-Süd in 1954 under the patronage of John the Baptist . It had to be demolished after only thirty years. It had become too small for the settlement that had grown further, and it was dilapidated. Since the city was planning a feeder road into the new development area at this location, the decision was also made to give up the property on Leutweinstraße and start the new construction on the market square.

The foundation stone for the new church was laid on June 2, 1985 and the first service could be celebrated at Christmas 1986. On 30 August 1987, the Church of Auxiliary Bishop was Karl Gnädinger consecrated . In 2001 the parishes in the south of Mannheim, St. Johannes, St. Antonius (Rheinau), St. Konrad ( Casterfeld ), St. Theresia ( Pfingstberg ) and Heilig-Kreuz ( Hochstätt ), merged to form the Mannheim-Süd pastoral care unit.

description

Johannesskulptur

The St. Johannes Church is in the center of Rheinau-Süd on the market square. It was the last work of the architect Heinz Heß , who helped shape Catholic church building in Mannheim after the Second World War. The 1,400 square meter building complex follows the idea of a comprehensive community center and includes, in addition to the church, a community hall, a youth room and a kindergarten with 100 places.

Elisabeth T. Veith was involved in the artistic design of the church . The altar was designed to match the architecture. The altar stone from the previous church, a 35 by 35 centimeter marble slab, was placed in St. John's Church in 2005. A statue of John and a wooden cross had already been taken over. The large concrete Johanness sculpture on the forecourt was made by the sculptor Leo Janischowsky . It was a foundation of the construction company that built the building complex.
