St. Micheln Church (Müelte)

The St. Micheln Church is in an exposed location on the western edge of the Sankt Micheln district of the city of Müelte in the Saale district , Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish Mücheln in the church district Merseburg Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

General

Archangel Michael is the patron of the church . Since November 2, 2017, the church has been included in the street directory Romanesque Street as the 88th church . The source of the Geisel river is located in the village and was considered to be one of the strongest springs in Central Germany, which is why a spring sanctuary is assumed at the site.

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. The church is said to have been founded in 1128 by Bishop Otto von Bamberg from St. Michael's Abbey . The arched gate with an arched window above is characteristic of the Romanesque architectural style .

The church tower has a large bell from 1481, the oldest bell in the Munich churches. The baptismal font of the church comes from the former village church Möckerling and one of the doors from the former village church Zorbaus. Both churches were demolished due to the expansion of the open pit.

A corner stone on the southwest corner shows a lettering and a representation of a horse. The east gable of the choir bears a four-spoke wheel cross . The horse and wheel cross are associated with a prehistoric place of worship .
