St. Ursula High School

The St. Ursula Gymnasium is a private , state-approved high school in the city center of Neheim . The Archdiocese of Paderborn has been the sponsor since 1991 . One year after it was founded, regular classes began in 1920 with the sisters of the St. Ursula Stift Werl . The former lyceum has also been accepting boys since 1987.

history

Before the Lyceum was founded, between 1879 and 1905 there was a higher girls' school in Neheim called "Töchterschule". The finances were insufficient to set up an urban secondary school for girls. On February 17, 1919, a “daughter's school association” was set up in favor of the planned “higher girls' school” in order to build a Catholic lyceum in Neheim. The sister community of the Werler Ursulines was ready to take over the school.

On April 22, 1920, classes could begin in a building on Friedensstrasse.

As early as 1921, the Lyceum moved into the former "Rector's School" on Engelbertplatz. In 1929 the foundation stone and topping-out ceremony for a new building on Engelbertstrasse take place. In 1941 the school was closed and converted into a hospital. In 1946 the city of Neheim gave the Ursulines back the “secondary school for girls”.

The expansion of the St. Ursula Lyceum, which at that time had the status of a modern language Progymnasium , to a regular grammar school took place in 1963. The first Abitur was awarded in 1966.

The "Association of Friends and Patrons" was founded in 1961 with the task of providing ideal and material support.

The old main building was expanded in 1973 with a more modern extension, and in 1982 specialist rooms for biology, chemistry, physics and art as well as a new gymnasium could be moved into. In 1987 co-education was introduced.

With the school year 1991/92 the Archdiocese of Paderborn took over the sponsorship. From 1997 to 1999 the school was fundamentally rebuilt and a new teachers' room, new music rooms and an expanded entrance hall created as a forum. The chapel was also adapted and restructured to meet the requirements of school life. The old gym was demolished and rebuilt as a double hall. In 2008 a cafeteria was added, the school yard was redesigned and in 2011 a “green classroom” was created for outdoor events.

School self-image

This Catholic grammar school sees its inherent task in creating a living space for pupils that keeps the spirit of freedom and love of the Gospel alive. The young person should develop his or her personality and deal appropriately and in a timely manner with the message of Christ.

The guiding principles of ursuline educational work are formative in the encounter. The lessons are intended to enable the imparting of knowledge and skills that help the students to better understand their world and to recognize connections. The encounter in the school community with respect and openness, which takes the other person seriously, corresponds to the model of Catholic schools sponsored by the Archdiocese of Paderborn.

This includes tolerance and respect for the opinion of the other as well as openness and the courage to critically reflect on society. Furthermore, the focus is on raising awareness of questions of values and orientations, as well as developing the ability to make judgments. This should result in a personal commitment to a fair coexistence with respect for other people. The school strives for a holistic education with the principles mentioned.
