The St. Agatha Chapel is a church building in Löllinghausen , a district of Meschede in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

In the place of today's chapel there was a chapel belonging to the Stratmann court, which was documented in 1508. The current chapel was built around 1820, at the end of the 19th century the building was so dilapidated that services could no longer be held in it. The landowner Franz König bought the estate and the chapel in 1891 and had the chapel extensively renovated and painted by a church painter. On September 20, 1892 St. Agatha was benediziert , the Way of the Cross was on August 18, 1893 the related indulgences initiated in accordance with the rules of the drain Congregation on May 10, the 1,742th During the Second World War , the building was hit by grenades and never repaired. Standing in a pasture, with no spatial reference to the place, it gradually fell into disrepair. In 1984 a chapel association was founded with the aim of preserving the chapel from decay and restoring it according to the old model. In 1992 the centenary church festival was celebrated in the restored chapel .

The chapel is decorated in the style of so-called historicism . As many styles of past eras as possible become a total work of art. A neo-Gothic conception of space, the ornamentation of which is based on the Renaissance , Art Nouveau and Romanticism , determines the room. The idea of a large neo-Gothic church should be conveyed. The apse is painted with a damask curtain , the pointed arches are decorated with tendrils and palmette leaves . The barrel vault is decorated with a wide braided band, which is said to be reminiscent of book illumination by Irish monks in the sixth to tenth centuries. The Way of the Cross is painted in the Nazarene style and bordered with temple-like borders. The upper decorative strip was provided with a vine leaf decoration. The rosettes and millefleurs were painted with stencils , as is customary in historicism .
