St. Anna (Kreuzberg)

The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Anna is a late Gothic, post-Gothic extended hall church in the Kreuzberg district of Freyung in the Lower Bavarian district of Freyung-Grafenau . It belongs to the parish association Freyung-Kreuzberg-Ringelai in the dean's office Freyung-Grafenau of the Diocese of Passau .

History and architecture

The pilgrimage to Kreuzberg has been documented since 1429 and was triggered by the late medieval bloom of St. Anne's veneration. The place was the focus of pilgrimages in the Diocese of Passau until the Mariahilf pilgrimage in Passau was established. In 1777, the number of pilgrims who visited the church on the three Saturdays after Michaelmas on September 29th is given as 20,000. The secularization and the elucidation then led to the decline of the pilgrimage. Today the church is again a popular place of pilgrimage , especially on Annentag on July 26th.

The building, located on a high mountain cone, was built as a hall church with a west tower beginning with the choir, which was started after 1494. The west tower was raised in 1903 with a pointed helmet. The equipment was reorganized in the years after 1960.

The choir consists of two yokes and a five-eighths ending . It is closed with ribbed vaults that rest on consoles that are partly decorated with masks. The considerably wider three-bay nave was not built until after 1603. The barrel vault rests on strong pilasters with fluted fighters and is provided with ribs in a simple diamond figure. The massive west gallery comes from the baroque period.

Furnishing

The baroque high altar comes from the pilgrimage church Gartlberg near Pfarrkirchen and was originally located there on the north choir wall. During a revision, the former painting was replaced by a group of wooden figures of St. Anne herself , which was created in 1633 as a free copy based on a late Gothic image of grace . As counterparts designed side altars show flat aedicula equipment incorporating cartilage ornament ; an altar of it was built after a year in 1673.

The pulpit is a work of popular rococo from around 1760 and is decorated with carved figures. Saints are depicted on the pulpit, the church fathers and Christ as the Good Shepherd on the pulpit cover .

Several wooden figures should also be mentioned, among them a group of St. Anne herself from around 1500 and a Madonna and Child in the nave from the end of the 15th century. Another rustic carving of St. Anne can be seen in the choir; this also includes a representation of the Holy Trinity as a three-person group from the early 17th century, as has been common in Lower Bavaria since the late Gothic period.
