St. Apollonia is a church building of the Roman Catholic Church in Eilendorf , a district of the city of Aachen . It serves as a branch church of the parish of St. Severin .

Prehistory 1774–1780

In 1774 the St. Apollonia Chapel was built in Eilendorf with the approval of Pastor Christian Virnich, but without the knowledge of the administrator of the imperial abbey Kornelimünster . It is the only one of what used to be five chapels and has been placed under monument protection. On June 2, 1777 the administrator of Kornelimünster, Carl Casper Freiherr von der Horst, subsequently granted the building permission. Three years later, on June 30, 1780, the Archbishopric of Cologne approved the consecration of the chapel of the Blessed Virgin and Martyr Apollonia of Alexandria . Between 1855 and 1886 masses and high offices were held in the chapel. There is a support association for the preservation of the chapel.

1926 until today

On February 23, 1926, efforts by individual villagers to found a church building association began. On August 1, 1926, the St. Apollonia Schützenbruderschaft was founded and on June 20, 1947 Pastor Offermann finally applied for the construction of the St. Apollonia kindergarten. The building permit was granted on January 26, 1950; the foundation stone was laid on September 17, 1950 and the completion on June 1, 1953 with an integrated emergency church in the kindergarten. The first mass was celebrated in the emergency church on February 9, 1954. In the same year the St. Apollonia-Kirchbau-Verein Ober-Eilendorf was founded . The proceeds from the 1957 parish festival under the motto We are building a church went to the new church.

Branch church

On January 29, 1958, the Aachen architect Peter Salm was commissioned to plan the new church. The construction lasted from 1959 to 1961 and on 24/25. August 1961 Bishop Johannes Pohlschneider consecrated the church. The glass windows of the new church were designed by the Aldorf artist Ludwig Schaffrath . The metal sculptor Albert Sous from Würselen designed the new tabernacle , the ambo (both in 1968) and an Easter candlestick (1969). At the end of 1972 a new bell was purchased. All four bells were cast in the Eifel bell foundry in Brockscheid .

On January 1, 1965, the church was parish and made a parish vicarie. Since 2010 St. Apollonia has formed the new overall parish of St. Severin with three other parishes . The association for the preservation of the Apollonia Chapel in Aachen Eilendorf eV has existed since 2010 and is restoring the chapel together with the parish.
