St. Benignus (Bischleben)
The Church of St. Benignus is a village church around Erfurt . It is located in the Bischleben district in the so-called Mauergäßchen, which connects the streets In der Linde and Backhausstraße . Together with Möbisburg and Rhoda , it now belongs to the Evangelical Parish of Bischleben.
history
The lower parts of the tower of the church are from a previous building from the Romanesque period . The patronage refers to Saint Benignus of Dijon , a missionary and martyr from Asia Minor .
The present church was first mentioned in 1419. It was evidently a single-nave hall church with a three-sided polygonal east end, to which the older tower was located to the west. In 1470 (building inscription) modifications were made.
During the Reformation the parish became Protestant . In 1551 (building inscription) another renovation took place. In 1650, damage caused by the Thirty Years' War was repaired. In 1699 the tower received its still existing Welsche dome with a lantern . In 1716 the nave was rebuilt as a hall church using older components. Inside it received a three-sided two-storey gallery, the pillars of which support a mirror vault.
In 1950, Bischleben and St. Benignus came to the Erfurt city area. In 1957 three new bells were cast and in the same year ceremonially consecrated by the then Thuringian regional bishop Moritz Mitzenheim . At that time, Bischleben was part of the Gotha church district .
In 1961 a new organ was installed. In 1983 the interior was repainted, a new external plaster was carried out in 1987. In 1993 the church roof and tower were re-covered. Further exterior renovations took place in 2005.
