St. Clement's Church

The Catholic parish church of St. Clemens in the Ruwer district of Trier , Kenner Weg 3, was built in 1870–1871. From the previous building erected in 1754, the western tower is still preserved.

history

Before 1754 there was a church (Feiserkirche) in the area of today's street "Am Kreuzchen". Excavations suggest that the old building is very old. A sculpture depicting Mary with baby Jesus from the second half of the 14th century is the oldest surviving object in the parish of Ruwer.

The successor building from 1754 in the Baroque style at today's location served the citizens of both of the then separate places Ruwer-Maximin and Ruwer-Paulin. At the same time, this represented the de facto amalgamation of the places, although this was not officially completed until 1930. After the Christian community in the catchment area had grown, another new building was necessary, which was carried out after an emergency letter to the episcopal authority in 1861 and an architectural design drawn up by Franz Georg Himpler in 1866 . The last mass in the old church took place in September 1869, after which the church service took place in the neighboring town of Eitelsbach and in the monastery chapel, to which an emergency church had been added for the time until the new church was completed.

The church was built in the neo-Romanesque style in 1870–1871 . The architect was Reinhold Wirtz , probably based on the plans of Himpler, who had meanwhile emigrated. The west tower of the old church was integrated into the new building. Despite the Franco-Prussian War at the time, construction work proceeded rapidly.

With the exception of the windows, the church survived the Second World War unscathed, but - as almost everywhere - the bronze bells were given to the armaments industry and melted down. A new bell could be consecrated as early as 1951.

There were major renovations and additions in 1893 ( adding a yoke to the tower ), 1934 (setting up a war memorial hall on the ground floor of the tower), 1960 (renovating and partially refurbishing) and 2009. The font dates from 1972.
