St. Cosmas and Damian is a church from the 13th and 16th centuries in the village of Rauns in Waltenhofen in the Oberallgäu district .

history

Church tower from 1250 with sound holes and corner blocks

The Gothic church was built in the 13th century under the Lords of Rauns as a separate church not far from their castle near the Iller.

In 1464 the church belonged to the Lords of Werdenstein . Around 1500 the nave was rebuilt while retaining the church tower.

In 1543 the church was Zwinglian and belonged to the reformed imperial city of Kempten . In 1548 it was acquired by the Kempten monastery and merged with the parish of Waltenhofen.

After secularization, the Kingdom of Bavaria left the building to the 26 farmers of Rauns in 1808. Today it belongs to the parish of St. Martin in Waltenhofen again. Mass celebrations take place regularly.

description

North side with a former entrance

The massive church tower with a gable roof and visible corner blocks has been preserved from the 13th century. With a footprint of around 6 by 6 meters, it stands to the side of the ship on the north side. It is called late Romanesque in Baedecker's travel guide . The large windows of the sound openings are adorned with columns. The year 1215 is carved into the ledge of a tower window. A large west-facing dial indicates the installation of a clock.

The nave with three windows on the south side and two more pointed arch windows in the choir is dated to around 1500. The nave is about 20 meters long and eight meters wide with the sign and choir .

On the north side, an entrance that is now walled up is visible in two phases. On the side of the outer wall is a holy water font.

Furnishing

Martyrs at the side altar

The furnishings include several parts of the predecessor church from the Hohenstaufen era . The baroque altars use Gothic figures from the Ulm School. Five figures on the walls are assigned to the Romanesque period: St. George, the church patrons Cosmas and Damian (two doctors of the 4th century), Verena and Elisabeth.
