St. Engelbert with parish center

The St. Engelbert Church is a Catholic church in the Remscheid district of Güldenwerth . With its 25 meter high bell tower, it shapes the image of the district. The church can accommodate around 150 people. The church is the youngest in town; the foundation stone was laid on February 19, 1989, and the church was consecrated on May 27, 1990. The architect was Wilhelm Dahmen from Düsseldorf . In addition to the churches of St. Suitbertus, St. Josef and St. Marien, it has belonged to the parish of St. Suitbertus, Remscheid, since the merger in 2011. The church is under the patronage of Count Engelbert II. Von Berg . The Remscheid-Güldenwerth train stop and a bus stop are in the immediate vicinity .

architecture

The floor plan consists essentially of two intersecting circles. The chancel, with the altar in the center, rises above the smaller circle.

Furnishing

Bert Gerresheim created the bronze cross on the back wall. The abstract artistic design of the two windows comes from Prof. Johannes Schreiter . In the larger circle of the floor plan, the rows of benches face the sanctuary in a semicircle. A wooden coffered ceiling spans the room, which is otherwise in graduated gray tones, and gives it a warm note.

organ

The organ was built in 1996 by the Kreienbrink company in Osnabrück. It has 2 manuals , 12 registers and 788 pipes. The manual registers are on interchangeable drawers and can therefore be played by any manual. The playing and register actions are mechanical.

More buildings

Next to the church is the parish center with the library and a kindergarten (built in 1996).

Previous buildings

In the years 1932–1955 church services were celebrated in a gymnastics home, later in the hall of the Hummel family restaurant in Remscheid-Güldenwerth. On November 1, 1954, the Archbishop of Cologne established the pastoral rectorate “St. Engelbert ”. With the purchase of the Villa Hentzen - with a large garden plot (not far north of today's church) - a provisional chapel was set up in 1955. This was consecrated on February 13, 1955 by Dean Reuter. The church grew; the chapel in the Villa Hentzen soon became too small. In 1963 a simple emergency church was built using the prefabricated method. This was sold in 1990 together with the villa used as a rectory and later demolished.
