St. Franziskus is a Roman Catholic parish church at Kirchfeldallee 1 in the Burgweinting district of the city of Regensburg ( Bavaria ).

history

The former main church of St. Michael in the village of Burgweinting had become too small for the Regensburg district, which had been growing rapidly since the 1990s, which is why a new parish church with modern architecture was built in the vicinity. The winner of the architectural competition held in 1998 was the Koenigs Architekten office in Cologne . After negotiations about the construction costs, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 20, 2001. On October 2nd, Manfred Müller sank the founding role into the foundation stone. The church was consecrated on May 8, 2004 by Gerhard Ludwig Müller .

Buildings and equipment

The east-facing church has a simple outer rectangular shape and has a free-standing bell tower. The layout of the main room is asymmetrical and elliptical. In the corner areas there are chapels, functional areas , a sacristy and an altar boy room. The muddy, whitewashed walls slope outwards. A glass fiber fabric on the church ceiling together with the shed roof creates light effects. The liturgical furnishings, which refer to the room, were designed by the sculptor Robert M. Weber (* 1958). The round altar island is bordered by the bench of ministers. The altar is located towards the church pews made of solid natural wood, which are grouped in a semicircle, and the ambo diagonally behind it . Both are made of stone and stainless steel. The tabernacle is in the wall of the main room, near the altar island. The inner housing is made of yellow colored glass, the outer frame of white matt glass and the doors are backed with stainless steel. The inside of the tabernacle is supplied with daylight, which is directed there through an outside window. The baptismal font, which is located next to the altar island, is double-walled and is supplied with running water. There is currently a small loan organ from Jann on the gallery as a temporary measure until the new organ is built.
