St. George from the south

The St. Georg Chapel in Neubrandenburg is an early Gothic brick chapel from the 1st half of the 15th century. It is located outside of Neubrandenburg's old town in front of the Treptower Tor and belongs to the St. Johannis Church . It is the only remaining one of three medieval chapels at the gates of Neubrandenburg.

History

In the Middle Ages, the chapel and some surrounding buildings belonged to a hospital. Separated from the city population, pilgrims were looked after here, who often returned from pilgrimages with leprosy and other infectious diseases. Later on, people suffering from the plague were also cared for.

From the 18th century onwards, frail elderly citizens of the city were welcomed into the hospital buildings. After the dissolution of the Bürgerhospitalverein, the houses served as normal residential buildings. Today they are used as a hotel with a restaurant.

The chapel itself is open to the public again after the renovation was completed in 1994. There are sporadic church services and weddings, and occasionally music events.

Building

East wall with decorative friezes, pointed arch windows and blind niches

The curved, rectangular brick building rests on a field stone base. It is 10.90 m long and 5.70 m wide and covered by a hipped roof. A square half-timbered roof tower with an octagonal lantern and hood sits in the middle . In its current form, it dates from the second half of the 18th century, but was replaced by a replica in 1994.

Circumferential friezes adorn the masonry, a multi - layered four - pass frieze below the eaves and a double German band below the windows. On the north and west walls there are pointed arch portals with profiled walls . The two pointed arch windows on the east wall are framed by pointed arch niches. By average, down slightly shortened Blend niche is a segment arched niche . It probably originally contained a pictorial representation.

Interior and outfit

The plain interior of the chapel is structured by wide pointed arch niches. An oak host shrine is embedded in a wall pillar in the northeast .

A fragment of a glass painting from the 14th century can be found hanging from a north window. A bearded male head is shown.

Originally the chapel had a three-winged altarpiece with carvings and paintings. This work of art is now in the aisle of the Johanniskirche (as of 2012).
