St. Georg and Bonifatius is a church building in the Freiburg district of Wiehre . The former Anglican church building now serves as the Seventh-day Adventist Church .

history

In 1894, the Freiburg congregation of the Anglican Church built the church "Saint George and Saint Boniface" according to plans by the architect Friedrich Bauer in neo-Gothic style on a piece of land that it had received from the city in 1893 . The foundation stone for this was laid on March 15, 1894 in the presence of the Baden Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich II and his wife Hilda as well as the consul of the United States . The church was consecrated on October 5th of the same year. Five years later a rectory was also built next to it. The congregation at that time was estimated to have around 200 members.

At the beginning of the First World War , the Anglican community dissolved - its members were mostly members of a hostile nation and left Freiburg voluntarily or forcibly. The church building, now unused, was becoming increasingly neglected. In 1921 the city bought the building from the owner, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, for 115,000 Reichsmarks and leased it to the New Apostolic Congregation , which acquired it in 1928. The Seventh-day Adventists also used the small church for a short time in the 1920s. They were able to buy the building in 1960 after the New Apostolic Congregation had grown rapidly and a new, larger church building was built in the Oberwiehre.

The Anglican congregation, which was newly formed after the Second World War , has been a guest at the Evangelical Petrus Congregation in Unterwiehre since 2009 after various stations and has around 100 parish members.

The building

The east- facing church building made of red sandstone has been a listed building for a long time . There is a small bell carrier above the facade gable , but without a bell. The choir apse at the five-eighth end closes the building off to the east. In the course of restoration and renovation work, the interior was heavily modernized and a gallery was built in to adapt the space to the growing number of members. In 1967 a youth and multi-purpose room was added. Further structural changes in the outdoor area are not possible due to the monument protection.
