St. Georg and Jakob (Oberbozen)
St. Georg and Jakob is a Roman Catholic church in Oberbozen , Ritten municipality , South Tyrol . It is important because of its frescoes from the 13th century and has been a listed building since 1983 .
The church is in a secluded location on a wooded elevation at 1111 meters above sea level on the Renon . The earth pyramid path and the route of the Renon cable car run in the immediate vicinity . It was first mentioned in a document in 1289. The nave walls and the round apse with their frescoes date from this time . These depict Christ Pantocrator in the mandorla , who is surrounded by the evangelist symbols and angels. Below you can see the apostles. Small remains of the Gothic painting from the 14th century have survived; the church tower, which was built a little apart from the nave, dates from around 1400.
In the course of a major renovation in the 17th century, the barrel vault in the nave, the windows and doors and the stone-framed shoulder arch portal were created. On the ceiling there are frescoes of Saints James, Blasius and Erhard as well as Saints Georg and Martin in simple stucco frames .
The church's equipment was removed for security reasons, as the building is lonely and is therefore at risk of break-ins. It consisted of the high altar with the altarpiece by Ulrich Glantschnigg from 1712 and the panels of the Way of the Cross from the 18th century.
