On December 1, 2008, St George became part of the Westpac Group, which contributed nearly 30% of the merged entity and created a leading financial services company in Australia. On March 1, 2010, the Westpac Group was incorporated as an authorized depository institution and the legal entity St.George Bank Limited was deregistered. St. George Bank is now an important division of the Westpac Group.

Even after the takeover by Westpac, the brand names St. George and BankSA have been retained.
