St. John the Evangelist is a Catholic church in the Cologne district of Stammheim , which was built between 1969 and 1970 according to plans by the architect Karl and Gero Band . The church belongs to the parish of St Hubert and the Birth of Mary , which emerged from three separate parishes in 2010 and is to be demolished after the profanation approved since November 2018 (status: June 2019).

Building description

The building is a very clear implementation of the architectural idea of the “tent of God” ( Rev 21.3  EU ): Its patina-green copper roof extends to the floor like a roof-only house and the building has no vertical walls. On the brick-walled gable sides, three vertical wall strips emerge on the inside and outside of the choir side, which structure the wall. At the opposite, brightly glazed gable, a cylindrical brick staircase leads to the gallery and bell-room, which protrude slightly from the gable and are clad with wood.

Entrance side with glazed gable front

On the roof sides the “tent” is opened by four pointed dormers, the ridge of which is pulled down low, resulting in a strongly folded roof shape. The dormers open into the interior with windows at the top. This is clad with light wood on the roof / wall surfaces and flooded with light. The altar is slightly raised and is arranged asymmetrically to the spatial axis - slightly offset to the right. The altar wall is closed off by a narrow strip of light along the gable edge ( verge ). In addition, in the chancel there are three narrow window slits placed vertically on top of each other to the side of the central axis, two larger rectangular windows at eye level and a horizontal strip of light above the altar wall niche.

Furnishing

Windows on the side of the altar shine through the back

All colored glazed windows on the altar wall were designed by Will Thonet in 1972 . An enamelled altar cross by Egino Weinert hangs below the small window slits . Two sculptures on the side projections of the altar wall - depicting the church patron and a Pietà - were created by the Stammheim artist Herbert Labusga .

Will complement the equipment through a digital organ of Allen Organ Company in 2000 with two manuals and 28 registers .

There is no bell.
