St. John the Baptist (Pasvalys)

St. John the Baptist is a Catholic church in Pasvalys at the confluence of the Lėvuo and the Svalia . It has characteristics of baroque and historicism . It belongs to the Panevėžys diocese in Lithuania .

history

The Grand Duke Aleksandras Jogailaitis gave land in 1497 and allowed a city to be built. In 1498 Jonas Grotas became the first pastor. In 1775 the villages of Karkliškės and Šlamai belonged to the church.

In 1776 the church burned down. From 1773 there was a parish school. From 1779 to 1787 a new massive church was built. In 1851 the current church building was consecrated by Bishop Motiejus Valančius .
