Alexander, King and Grand Duke of Poland-Lithuania

Alexander the Jagiellon (Polish: Aleksander Jagiellończyk , Lithuanian: Aleksandras Jogailaitis ; born August 5, 1461 in Krakow , †  August 19, 1506 in Vilnius ) was Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1492 and King of Poland from the Jagiellonian dynasty from 1501 .

Life

The fourth son of Casimir IV. Andrew was appointed Grand Duke of Lithuania after his death. After the death of his brother Jan I. Olbracht , he became King of Poland in 1501. He was since 1495 with Helena of Moscow , the daughter of the Russian Grand Duke, Ivan III. , married. Nevertheless, there were several military conflicts with the Grand Duchy of Moscow , as a result of which Lithuania had to cede considerable territories to Ivan in 1503.

He began his rule with a special right in which he placed decision-making power exclusively in the hands of the Senate , in which the monarch presided. In 1505, in a Senate session on Radom, the Nihil Novi right was added to the state constitution . This meant a restriction of the rule of the king, who from then on could only make decisions with the consent of the Sejm .

Alexander died in Vilnius at the age of 45 and was buried in the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus .
