The Panevėžys diocese ( Latin : Dioecesis Panevezensis , lit. Panevėžio vyskupija ) is a diocese in northeastern Lithuania and part of the Roman Catholic Church in Lithuania .

history

The diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Vilnius and was due to published on April 4, 1926 Apostolic Constitution of Pope Pius XI. founded. This regulated the adjustment of the administrative borders of the Roman Catholic Church in the Baltic States to the political borders of the time. After the diocese of Panevėžys was separated from the diocese of Samogitia on April 6, 1926 (together with the diocese of Kaišiadorys ), it has belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Vilnius since October 1926.

On May 8, 1997, a sub-area of ​​the Panevėžys diocese was also separated off in order to rebuild the diocese Šiauliai to the west .
