Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Aries

The Catholic Church of St. Josef in Widdern in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg was built in 1966.

history

Aries has been evangelical since the Reformation . After the Second World War , numerous Catholic displaced persons and refugees from Saarland, Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Romania came to the city. The Catholics were initially looked after by the Catholic parish in Berlichingen . The services initially took place in the Protestant Laurentius Church , but from 1955 Catholics were able to use a room in the Liebfrauenkapelle in the cemetery. In the early 1960s, the city offered the Catholic community a building site in the new building area on Friedhofstrasse. Construction began in the spring of 1966 and was completed in the late year of the same year. Alongside the old Church of Our Lady and the neighboring New Apostolic Church built in 1962, the church was the third church within a few meters on the hill to the west of the town center. The construction costs were taken over by the diocese of Rottenburg and the parish of Berlichingen. Bishop Carl Joseph Leiprecht consecrated the church on October 2, 1966 . In the church there was once a copy of the Widdern Madonna from the Liebfrauenkapelle, which was later replaced by a larger statue. The church near the cemetery has been used for funeral services of all denominations since 2007, in addition to catholic services.
