Evangelical Laurentius Church in Aries

The Laurentius Church in Widdern in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg is a Protestant parish church . It was mentioned for the first time in 1258 and rebuilt in its current form from 1892 to 1895 while maintaining the late Gothic building core.

history

The origins of the church in Aries are largely in the dark. Due to its importance for the surrounding churches, it is assumed that a church in Aries existed as early as the 10th century. The church is mentioned for the first time in 1258. When the church is first mentioned, no church patron is named, but until 1481 it was consecrated on the day of St. Martin , so that the church was originally consecrated to this saint and after the victory in the battle on the Lechfeld on Laurentius Day of the year 955 a change of patronage towards St. Laurentius could have taken place.

When it was first mentioned in 1258, the church's patronage rights lay with the Canons' Monastery of Mosbach . The church was the mother church for the branches in Unterkessach , Korb , Jagsthausen and Olnhausen , which, however, with the exception of the Unterkessach parish , which only became an independent parish in the 19th century , were raised to their own parishes by 1600.

Due to the splintered ownership structure in Aries in various inheritance shares, there were already some Reformed subjects in 1542. The Reformation was finally completed around 1544 when the heir Hans Israel von Zillenhart succeeded in convincing the chaplain Simon Ziegler to accept the new order of worship and to take over the benefices due to the Mosbach monastery . The right of patronage, however, came to the Electoral Palatinate after the Mosbacher Stift was abolished in 1562 . The Zillenhart family became Catholic again in 1763 with Christian Albert von Zillenhart, which resulted in a small Catholic community again and occasional minor religious conflicts.

The church has been renovated many times over the years. In 1582 the church tower, which had been damaged by a storm, was repaired, around 1710 the church was extensively renovated and a new organ was acquired a little later. The church was already considered too small and dilapidated in the 18th century, but many building measures were not carried out, especially on the often criticized rectory, due to the quarreling circumstances of the Widderner Ganerbe. The rebuilding of the church in its present form did not take place until the late 19th century, according to the plans of the architect Louis Stahl .
