St. Josef (originally St. Joseph ) is a parish church in the south of Grevenbroich . The church was built between 1957 and 1959 in the southern part of the city . The church was planned by the architect Gottfried Böhm . In 2007 the church was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Grevenbroich. The parish around St. Josef is now part of the parish community Grevenbroich Vollrather Höhe.

Building history

In 1954 the property was acquired for the construction of a church, for a youth home and for a kindergarten. In 1956 an emergency church was completed. In the same year St. Josef was founded as a rectorate parish . Gottfried Böhm's design emerged victorious from the competition limited to four architects. The church was built between 1957 and 1959 and was consecrated on August 23, 1959.

During a tour of the almost completed church building, the archdiocese master builder of the Archdiocese of Cologne, Building Councilor Wilhelm Schlombs , judged the new structure: "This is by far the best church that has been built in the archdiocese of late."

Notation

The document signed by the then Archbishop of Cologne Joseph Cardinal Frings on January 10, 1954 about the establishment of the independent parish of St. Joseph in Grevenbroich wrote the name of the church with "ph". Today the spelling with "f" is common.

Furnishing

Since 1962 the church has had a window wall designed by the Cologne artist Helmut Lang , which illustrates the life of St. Joseph in 17 stations .

In 1990 the company Orgelbau Romanus Seifert & Sohn built an organ with 1400 pipes and 19 registers, which are distributed over two manuals and a pedal.

The church has three bronze bells from the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen, which were cast in 1958 and 1959. They have the strike tone series: g '- es'' - f ''. The diameters of the bells are: 1036 mm, 653 mm and 577 mm. The bells weigh: 675 kg, 160 kg and 120 kg.

Parishioners

Today the parish has around 3,500 parishioners (as of 2006) and belongs to the parish community of Grevenbroich Vollrather Höhe.

Groups and community life

There are numerous groups in the community who shape community life in different places. An example of this is the group of altar boys. Their work is organized by the altar boys' group. In addition to ministering, the currently 40 children and young people are offered various leisure activities.

The youth liturgy group is also located in the community. It currently has 17 members, only a few of whom are from the southern part of the city itself. He is planning youth fairs, which have had a tradition in the Südstadt community since the 1970s at the latest.

Furthermore, the scouts of the St. Joseph tribe are part of the community. The tribe was founded in 1975 and had around 100 members in 2012. Every year he organizes a one to two week summer camp. The youth choir deserves a special mention.

Another point of contact for parishioners is the parish library. Around 3,500 media for all ages are available there on two floors. Around 4,500 to 5,000 loans are made every year. These include more than 2,000 children's books.
