St. Josef (Passau)
St. Josef is the Roman Catholic parish church of the Passau-Auerbach parish in Passau .
The church was built from 1927 to 1928 according to plans by Michael Kurz . It is a granite building with a clear reference to medieval models. The tower is designed as a choir tower. Kurz expressed this style most representatively in the parish church of St. Josef in Memmingen, which was built at the same time .
Furnishing
The paintings and frescoes were created in 1931 and are by Albert Burkart , with whom Kurz also worked in Memmingen. The large altar cross was created in 1932 by Karl Baur . Wolf Hirtreiter created the modern equipment of the church .
organ
The organ was built in 1936 by Becker & Hiendl and has a complete pneumatic action . In 1996 the organ was treated against woodworm infestation and restored. The eight large pipes in the prospectus are blind pipes.

Peal
The bell was cast in 1930 by the Passau bell foundry Lorenz. In the Holy Week of 1942, the three heaviest bells were removed. The pastor at the time, Josef Winkler, did not let even the smallest bell ring at Easter 1942 in protest. After the Second World War, the three big bells were found and returned in the Hamburg bell camp. The chime of St. Josef is special in that it is one of the few chimes that was cast between the two world wars to this day.

Trivia
- In the 15th edition of the Großer Brockhaus , the so-called “Weimar Brockhaus” , St. Josef can be found with a depiction of the then still unadorned choir as an example of modern church construction .
- The bricks used in the construction come from the brick kiln which was built especially for the construction of the Kachlet power station, which was built at the same time . Clinker bricks were walled up in the granite façade, most of which were considered rejects and therefore cost nothing.
