The furniture store Hiendl was founded in 1926 by the organ builder Joseph Hiendl and his colleague Julius Becker in Passau in the Neustift district . After Becker's death, Hiendl ran the company alone. Very soon furniture was being made alongside organs. After the Second World War, Hiendl's son, the cabinet maker Rudolf Hiendl, took over the business. He only ran the company as a carpentry and furniture shop .

In 1963, Klaus Hiendl joined the family business and took over management of it together with his three years younger brother Rudolf Hiendl in the early 1970s. Both gradually expanded it into one of the largest furniture store chains in southern Germany. In September 1973 the first “Wonderland of Living” opened in the Neustift district of Passau. After the establishment of a second branch in Regensburg in 1995, further branches in Augsburg , Fürstenstein , Neuötting and Rosenheim followed in recent years .

The company became known through its advertising with the actor Ottfried Fischer and the advertising slogan "Hiendl - more so-called".

In 2006 the company reportedly had more than 1,300 employees and generated sales of 200 million euros. On October 11, 2006, Klaus Hiendl died at the age of 62 as a result of a traffic accident. His son became the second managing director alongside his brother Rudolf.

In June 2007 the owner family sold the traditional company to the Austrian furniture group XXXLutz . The furniture store has been called XXXL Hiendl since then .

In the meantime only the houses in Regensburg, Passau and Neuötting appear under the name XXXL Hiendl. The branches in Augsburg and Fürstenstein operate as XXXLutz, the furniture store in Rosenheim was initially closed, then reopened as Mömax furniture store (also part of the XXXLutz group).
