Convent church from 1909

The Sankt-Josefsheim is a nursing home in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg .

history

The Josefsheim was founded in 1891 by Blessed Maria Tauscher , who was also the founder of the order of the Carmelites of the Divine Heart of Jesus . The Carmelites have been working in this place since 1893. Initially, the home was used to host orphans. The building also housed the first chapel of the Holy Family Curate at the time . Above the entrance to the building on Pappelallee was written: "Go all to Joseph, the father of the poor". In 1909, a neo-Gothic style church was built on the property of the home according to plans by August Kaufhold , which initially served the Italian community and the Holy Family community as a place of worship until their own church was built. At the same time the church is the convent church of the Carmelites.

From 1945 to 2019 the St. Josefsheim was used as a retirement home. This use was given up for fire protection reasons. The construction of a stationary elderly care facility, social offers for all generations and the creation of affordable housing are planned on the site. The mother house of the nuns, the church and a neighboring house are also used.
