The Holy Family parish church in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg in the Pankow district is a Roman Catholic church. It was inaugurated in 1930 and was designed by the architect Carl Kühn .

history

Church Holy Family

Since October 4, 1903, there was a pastoral care center in Pappelallee near today's Sankt-Josefsheim . In 1904 the previous Herz-Jesu congregation split up and the independent Catholic congregation was founded because the population of Berlin had increased enormously as a result of immigration from the former eastern German provinces . The construction of a new place of worship became necessary, for which funds were raised and a plot of land southwest of Wichertstrasse was purchased. On August 1, 1920, the parish was granted parish status.

The foundation stone for the church building, which still exists today, was laid on St. Martin's Day in 1928 by the Auxiliary Bishop Josef Deitmer at the time . The blueprints came from Hehl's student Carl Kühn . Two years later, after the bells had been consecrated on April 27, 1930, Bishop Christian Schreiber was able to consecrate the church with the patronage of the Holy Family - Peace Memorial Church . The church was completed in 1931 with the installation of an organ from St. Hedwig's Cathedral .

Towards the end of the Second World War , the rectory and front building suffered serious bomb damage on March 18, 1945, which also affected the church.

It was not until 1961 that a more extensive renovation of the church could begin.

After the fall of the wall , the interior of the church was redesigned and it was given its current appearance. The altar consecration dates to May 9, 1993. On September 26, 1998, the reconstructed organ was put back into operation. Structural reforms in the Archdiocese of Berlin led to the merger with the St. Augustine parish in 2003 .

architecture

The entire structure is assigned to brick expressionism. It was bricked up and faced with clinker bricks. The main portal is located behind an open entrance hall in front of it with two horseshoe-shaped portal openings. There are five-storey residential buildings on both sides, which were built in the same style and with the same building materials.

Structure

The area of the church is 24 m × 14 m. She turns her narrow side towards the street. The main nave is a plastered brick building in the style of a basilica . The 15 m high central nave has a barrel vault and is designed like a hall. The two side aisles, each 3 m wide, are also barrel vaulted. Gilded clinker bricks inside emphasize the pillars and wall templates between the arcade openings.

Tower and bell

The parish church of the Holy Family dominates the image of the street and the Humannplatz behind it with its compact 40-meter-high, rectangular church tower in three stepped blocks . It is supposed to symbolize a "praying giant". Four iron bells in the tower ring for worship, at 12 noon and 6 p.m. for the prayer of the Angelus (angel of the Lord), or on special occasions.

Sanctuary

In the center of the nave of the church is the former high altar , which is still original from the construction period and is made of relief oak. The reredos (rear wall of the altar) shows God the Father and the Holy Spirit, surrounded by the Holy Family as the namesake of the church: the child Jesus Christ, Mary and Joseph. The picture also shows King David and the prophet Isaiah . The center of the back wall of the altar contains the tabernacle with an everlasting light in which the Eucharistic bread is kept. The square altar table in front of the high altar is used for the celebration of the Eucharist . An ambo , a baptismal font , wooden carved figures of Mary and Joseph complete the polygonal altar apse.

pulpit

Between the first two side pillars to the left of the chancel is the pulpit, decorated on a brass panel with the symbols of the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which is no longer used in the service. The peace memorial chapel is set up in a niche in the entrance area of the church. A pietà has adorned the small chapel since 1981 ; it is a copy of a late Gothic work of art , the original of which is in Bergheim near Cologne. At this place, visitors are to be reminded of the senseless victims of the wars and encouraged to take part in peacekeeping activities.

organ

In the gallery there is an organ that was implemented and expanded by the organ building workshop Johannes Kircher ( Heidelberg ) , which was installed here in 1998. The organ was originally built in 1862 by the Euler brothers in the collegiate church (Bad Gandersheim) with 37 registers , divided into two manuals and a pedal . 1973-1975, a new extended over three manuals was playing table installed to register contracture was electrified. In 2000 the collegiate church received a new organ, the previous organ was acquired by the parish of the Holy Family.
